ON THIS DAY IN TEENAGE HISTORY (1965), nineteen-year-old grape picker Eliseo Medina attended the first strike meeting held by the United Farm Workers (UFW). A farm worker since age eight, he participated in the Delano Grape Strike (1965-1970) as an organizer and UFW board member. Medina worked closely with labor leader and civil rights activist Cesar Chavez (Medina and Chavez are pictured above) until 1978. The Los Angeles Times called Medina “one of the most successful labor organizers in the country.”
