ON THIS DAY IN TEENAGE HISTORY (2004), nineteen-year-old Moqadasa Sidiqi became the first person to vote in Afghanistan’s landmark presidential election. A refugee, she cast her ballot in Pakistan, where polling opened half an hour ahead of Afghanistan. Sidiqi had fled Kabul, Afghanistan, with her family in 1992. “I am so very happy and proud,” she said. “I hope that this election will bring peace to my country and I hope that my family will be able to return to our homeland.”
