ON THIS DAY: November 1

ON THIS DAY IN TEENAGE HISTORY (2007), fifteen-year-old Anton Abele received a MTV Europe Free Your Mind award for his efforts to combat street violence in Sweden. Abele’s anti-violence campaign began after sixteen-year-old Riccardo Campogiani was beaten to death by a group of teenagers in October. A demonstration organized by Abele attracted about 10,000 people in Stockholm. In 2008 he created a campaign titled “Stop Street Violence.” In October of 2010, the eighteen-year-old Abele became the youngest ever Member of the Swedish Parliament.
