ON THIS DAY: November 5

ON THIS DATE in 2011, fourteen-year-old Irish singer Mark Boylan performed his song “Stateside” before more than 65,000 people at the Churchill Downs racetrack in Louisville, Kentucky. The boy from Banagher, a small town in central Ireland, was a fan of the Breeders’ Cup World Championships, a two-day, $26 million horse-racing extravaganza event, and wrote “Stateside” as a tribute to the event. Boylan recorded the song in his bedroom, uploaded it to YouTube, then emailed it to 14 Breeders’ Cup employees. “When we first heard the song ‘Stateside,’ we were blown away,” said Peter Rotondo, vice president of media and entertainment for the Breeders’ Cup.
