ON THIS DATE in 1927, nineteen-year-old Winferd L. Hathaway saved five people from drowning in the frigid waters of New York’s Lake Champlain. Five fishermen, aged twelve to sixty-one, were fishing on three sheds on the lake near Essex, New York, when a stiff wind came up and the ice began to break. Hathaway alternately paddled and carried a light canoe to where the five were in danger and brought them to where the ice was thicker.
