ON THIS DATE In 1863, fourteen-year-old Union drummer Orion Howe suffered severe wounds at the Civil War Battle of Vicksburg yet managed to get a message through to General William Sherman. According to his Medal of Honor citation, the drummer reported “ the necessity of supplying cartridges for the use of troops under command of Colonel Malmborg.” Howe received his medal in 1896, 33 years after the Battle of Vicksburg.
