NOVEMBER 14: Oh, Godfrey!

124ON THIS DATE in 1968, fifteen-year-old Margo Godfrey won the women’s surfing world championship in Rincon, Puerto Rico.

Writing for Surfing magazine, Godfrey (later Godfrey Oberg) said her “stomach was turning, my legs were shaking, and my mind was blowing” before topping Hawaii’s Sharron Weber and Australia’s Phyllis O’Donnel for the women’s championship.

Godfrey Oberg told People magazine in 1977, “There are ten really famous male surfers in the world, and one really famous female surfer. That’s me. I want to ride the biggest waves any woman has ever ridden.”
