February 8: Debi Thomas, champion

images-slides-DebiThomas-djs_1.jpgON THIS DATE in 1986, eighteen-year-old Debi Thomas became the first African-American figure-skating champion when she won the gold at the National Figure Skating championships. A pre-med major at Stanford, Thomas landed five triple jumps in front of a crowd of 7,235 at Uniondale, New York’s, Nassau Coliseum to defeat defending champion Tiffany Chin.
