FEBRUARY 9: Leslie scores 101

Lisa Leslie portraitTWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO today, seventeen-year-old Lisa Leslie scored 101 points in one half of a high school game for Morningside High of Inglewood, California.

The 6-foot-5-inch center was a cinch to break Cheryl Miller’s then-record of 105 points, but the opponent, South Torrence, refused to play the second half. Morningside held a 102 to 24 lead.

Leslie averaged 27 points, 15 rebounds and seven blocked shots as a senior and led her high school to back-to-back state championships before moving on to college at USC and a pro career in the WNBA, where she was the league’s Most Valuable Player in 2001, 2004 and 2006.

Epiphanny Prince of Murry Bergtraum (New York) High broke Miller’s record by scoring 113 points in a 137-32 win over Brandeis in 2006.
